After an 8 week break from football which felt like a full off season, the Keebra Park Open A’s were back in action against Marsden in the first knockout game of the GIO Cup 2016. Keebra were extremely focused and determined to start their campaign off with a solid performance on both sides of the ball. Keebra burst out of the blocks scoring off their first set after a nicely timed set piece saw halfback Tanah Boyd spy a gap in the defensive line. However, Marsden quickly settled back into the game and tried to stretch the Keebra defence using a wide passing game to the edges. Marsden was able to hit the scoreboard and apply some pressure for a 10-15min period early. Unfortunately, this was all they were able to hang on for with Keebra applying a mountain of pressure. The cracks started to widen and Keebra took full advantage. Keebra was able to regularly cross the advantage line and find holes in the Marsden defence. Keebra took a 28-4 half time lead into the break knowing full well that they hadn’t yet hit their potential.
The second half started with more urgency and efficiency as Keebra managed to score at will. Off the back of a man of the match performance for Australian Schoolboys against England, Payne Haas proved unstoppable yet again. Even despite being sin binned for 10min the big prop managed to cross the white line 4 times for Keebra. Haas was well backed up by all members of the squad who contributed to the rout of Marsden. Despite the final score indicating a huge win, Keebra knows the competition will only get harder from here on out and they will have to keep improving to go all the way!
In other games, the outspoken Ipswich side capitulated against the 5th seed Coombabah in what was a surprise result. Wavell and PBC also had comfortable victories against Gee Shield opposition.
Next week at Pizzey Park the QLD Semi Final action will see:
Keebra Park v Wavell State High School (4:30pm)
PBC v Coombabah (6pm)
