This week at Keebra Park saw the start of the local schools competition with the Under 13’s in action at Elanora and the 14 and 15 years “B” sides trialling against Palm Beach Currumbin. The 13’s were very good in their opening encounter which is reflective of the depth in this age group while the older boys both gave a good showing against PBC which is a good sign for the season proper.
Spencer Hepi was a standout for the 15’s and lead them well playing both fullback and in the centres during a hard fought contest. While both the 14’s and 15’s managed to get the better of PBC on the day, these games were more a diagnostic tool for the coaching staff and to allow the students to try out in different positions as many have undergone changes in both height and weight that have opened up new possibilities in 2011.
The next few weeks will also see the commencement of trialling in the Open division, the first rounds of the rugby union sevens competition and the 2012 development squad meeting, so all in all it is a busy time for both students and staff. Congratulations also go out to the representatives in the various Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cup squads who also begin competition next week.
The 2012 Los Angeles Tour is gaining momentum with contact being made with De La Salle College and Long Beach High, the two premier NFL schools in California. These schools both produced six NFL rookies in 2010 and will provide our boys opportunities to interact with their Trans Pacific peers.
Good luck for 2011.
