With the qualifying rounds of the Broncos Schoolboy
Challenge competitions virtually over and the knock
out stages National Arrive Alive Cup set to commence
it has been a boon year for last years National Finalists
and current Queensland Champions Keebra Park. While
the Southport based school has traditionally been a
stronghold of schoolboy football, this years results
have seen its strongest showing across the board and
an indicator that the schools “Sports Specialisation
in Rugby League Program” in conjunction with the
Wests Tigers affiliation are really making a difference.
“I’m particularly pleased with the results
so far this year” said coach of 18 years Greg
Lenton. “We have always performed well at the
senior school level and while we have continued this
we have also had some exceptional success within the
junior school” he added.
In the Open A division where Keebra are the current
Queensland Champions and 2006 National finalists the
side captained by hooker and Nerang Junior Jimmy Poland
have just one game of the round robin component left
and should finish in first place.
“We have faced some pretty stiff competition so
far this year and there are no easy games” he
said. “The boys are training well though and are
confident that we can give a good account of ourselves
in the Arrive Alive Cup” he added.
In other divisions the Open C’s have made it into
the Gold Coast Titans Cup final where they will face
rivals Palm Beach Currumbin in a highly anticipated
match up where both schools will be looking to cement
themselves as inaugural champions.
The 15 yrs and 13yrs teams have won the Broncos Powerade
Kevin Walters Cup and Steve Renouf Shields pre challenge
rounds respectively while the 14 yrs side has finished
third in the Michael Hancock Cup. These results are
extremely important as the guarantee qualification for
the 2007 competitions.
