Local and intrastate coaches will converge on Keebra Park State High School this weekend for the schools annual “Coach The Coaches” clinic with the Wests Tigers. Coaches from junior leagues clubs from as far afield as Central and Northern Queensland will join their local counterparts as Wests assistant coach Royce Simmons and his team including newly named captain, Mark O’Neill, ex captain Scott Sattler and a number of current first graders impart their knowledge on the latest innovations in Rugby League coaching.

“These clinics are an excellent opportunity for NRL clubs to put something back into the game at the grassroots level” said Simmons. “More importantly they show the young upcoming players what is required regarding fitness, skill and mental attitude as the prepare to take the step to the elite level” he added.

Last years clinics were a huge success and Keebra Park head coach Greg Lenton is happy that this event has become a permanent part of the schools program. “Our affiliation with Wests has made clinics like this possible.” He said. “With constant contact between the school and the club we now have a perfect diagnostic system that ensures that the players we coach here at the school are prepared for a career in the NRL. This preparation will ultimately lead to greater success in our graduates.” He added.

The clinics will start on Friday afternoon at 3-30 PM, with the main session being held on Saturday morning. The school is situated on Anne street Southport and anyone interested is welcome to attend.

TRIALS A ROARING SUCCESS

The weekend saw the Under 15's and the Open rugby league teams travel to Bundaberg for trial games against a combined Bundaberg High Schools XIII. Two coaches travelled North on Thursday morning and after a brief stop off at Bargara Beach the boys headed into Bundaberg for the games.

With both squads having a number of new additions, these trials were an important process whereby the coaches could gain information on what the boys were capable of and where there was room for improvement. Opens coach Greg Lenton was pleased with what he saw and was happy to have the chance to see how the team gelled. "Overall its been a worthwhile trip and it has let me see how the boys are travelling and where we need to head from here". These views were echoed by 15's coach Kurt Richards. "Its been a good start to the year with a trial as the season proper is fast approaching and although we have been training over the christmas break it was good for the boys to have some actual game time and to gain some match fitness. Super four trials are set to commence next week and details will be posted as soon as they are available.
