There was a real show of the depth of local schoolboy
rugby league talent this week as the two local heavyweights
featured in the two semi finals of the South East Queensland
component of theArrive Alive Cup. While it was bad news
for Palm Beach Currumbin who narrowly went down to Wavell
State High 14-8 in Brisbane it was great news for Keebra
Park State High School as they progressed through to
the regional Finals with a classy 24 14 disposal of
SunnyBank State High.
In a match that saw both sides lose players in the
opening exchanges it was eventually the depth of the
Keebra Park outfit that got them over the line. “It
was a real war of attrition” said Keebra coach
Greg Lenton. “It was a show of the character of
the boys in that they could adapt to the situation while
under the pressure of finals football”, he added.
Keebra opened the scoring and while Sunnybank replied
to keep themselves in contention it was the relentlessness
of the Keebra attack that eventually saw them worn down
and ultimately conquered. Lead by a mature leader in
Sam Moa, Keebra played sensible sets of six and relied
on this momentum to build the score. Outstanding games
by brothers Shane and Greg Eastwood further spurred
the team on. “It was hard out their but we fed
off each other and encouraged each other “ said
Shane. “Basically we inspired each other”,
he added.
