| Light rain and overcast conditions did little to dampen the spirits of the 16 primary school rugby league teams who converged on Keebra Park State High School this week for the third annual Keebra Park/ Wests Tigers Sevens Tournament. Schools from both the local area as well as Marsden State School and Ipswich Grammar from Brisbane contested this years event with reigning champions Elanora keen to defend their title.
The event, now in its third year has continued to gain support from primary schools in the local area and the addition of interest from Brisbane schools is an indication of the popularity of this contest. Wests Tigers marketing executive and ex captain Darren Senter attended the event and was amazed at the talent on display. “Its great to see these kids having so much fun and displaying such a level of skills at such an early age.” He said. “Who knows we may even uncover the next Benji Marshall.” He added.
The competition was hard fought and as the day progressed it was Nerang and Broadbeach who emerged to contest the final after hard fought wins against Worongary and Upper Coomera respectively. Nerang started strongly and were soon ahead and though Broadbeach dug deep they were unable to halt a string of Nerang Tries that saw a final score of Nerang 26 Broadbeach 6. Nerang's Harley Kay received the man of the match award and his team mate Matt Staines was player of the carnival.
