Keebra Park High School are through to the Queensland
final of the Arrive Alive Cup after emerging victorious
from a stunning struggle with rivals Palm Beach-Currumbin
last night.
Keebra won the match 10-0 but only secured the victory
at Pizzey Park when damaging centre Kingi Akoula bulldozed
his way over in the corner with 90 seconds to go.
The match was not without its controversy, with PBC
half Matt Nuttall sinbinned for the final 10 minutes
of the match after the referee called a high tackle.
But in the end Keebra were too strong Akaoula’s
barnstorming match-winner, in which he beat four defenders,
a fitting finale.
“Nobody deserved to lose that game,” said
Keebra coach Greg Lenton.
“We did a tremendous amount of work. Our attack
last week was outstanding but this week we got into
the defensive battle.”
Keebra took a 6-0 lead into half-time after Bodine
Thompson swooped in the 10th minute.
He ran a great line off five-eigth Robert Lui, and
went over untouched.
But it was to be an arm wrestle from there, with desperate
defence and also some handling errors a feature for
both sides.
PBC coach Rod Patison admitted to being a ‘little
confused’ by the sin-binning but praised both
teams’ efforts.
“We did make a few mistakes and a few late decisions
that contributed to errors,” he said.
“The critical thing was we didn’t execute.”
