While the majority of fans who
packed Suncorp stadium on Saturday were there to farewell
Gorden Tallis in his last home game there were a group
of spectators who had come for an entirely different
reason. A contingent of 50 Keebra Park parents, teachers
and freinds had come to cheer on the under fifteeens
who were playing Ipswich Grammar in their finals appearance
in the Alfred E Chave trophy.
With a depleted team due to the Gold Coast District
junior finals being played on the same day, the fifteens
started strongly and opened the scoring with a try to
Wade King. Keebra kept the lead right up to the last
3 minutes when a breakaway try to the Ipswich number
6 sealed the game for the Grammar school. While it may
have been a loss on the scoreboard it was a great victory
for the players who not only got to play in the fantastic
atmosphere of the "Cauldron" but also got
to show what they as individuals can do when the chips
are down. "The boys showed great maturity today,
given that many have not played at this level before"
said Coach Kurt Richards. "I am proud of the boys
who stepped up to fill in the vacant spots and did a
great job" he added.
Tries were scored by Wade King, Brad De Paul and Chris
Mann.
