While followers of schoolboy rugby
league are somewhat used to the reading of the exploits
of the Keebra Park Opens it was the school under fifteens
that stole the limelight this week with their winning
of the annual Brisbane Broncos 2004 Big Six challenge.
Under coach Kurt Richards the team
progressed through the round robin format undefeated
against some very tough opposition. “When you
consider that this competition is the pinnacle of schoolboy
football in the South East region, to emerge unbeaten
is quite a feat”, he said. The boys adopted a
professional approach to training and this attitude
shone through during the games”, he added.
Half back/captain Wade King showed
maturity in leading his team around the paddock and
big seasons by Brett Thomas, Chris Mann, Chris Allen,
Brad de Paul, Robert Lewis and Orlando Wihongi Seai
set the platform for victory against opposition who
were often superior in size. “Sunnybank had a
huge pack this year so we played to our strengths and
used speed both around the ruck and out wide to negate
this size “, said Richards. “This encouraged
the boys belief in their own ability and allowed us
to achieve at a higher level”, he added.
On the way to victory, Keebra
faced Wavell, SunnyBank, and Clairvaux, State High schools
from Brisbane, Harristown State High from Toowoomba
and local rivals Palm Beach Currumbin state High here
on the coast. This performance continues the schools
dominance in this competition that saw the fifteens
lose only one game in 2003 and win the tournament in
2002.
